SoSe 15: V-Literary Studies: Periods-Genres-Concepts I: Carnival and Literature
Andreas Mahler
Kommentar
Human beings seem to be in need of some moment of release or some extra space in which the seriousness and consequentiality of everyday life can be suspended so that life can be supported again when one comes back to it. In oral cultures, this function is fulfilled by the institution of 'carnival'; in written cultures this seems to have been largely taken over by what is called 'literature'. The lecture will trace this development (as one of functional 'equivalence') from an oral to a written form of release (and arguably back again) by following English cultural history, and its literature, from the Middle Ages to the present moment.
