Kommentar
Emotions are essential to human social life. They are inseparable from thinking and acting and are central to social interactions and social relationships. Past research in sociology, anthropology, and social psychology has comprehensively documented that emotions are, to a large extent, shaped by culture and social structures. This is to say that emotions (i.e., emotional experience, regulation, or expression) are, through learning and socialization, "fine-tuned" or "calibrated" towards prevalent culture-specific practices and expectations. This seminar attends to the question of what happens when
a) actors change their social and cultural environments (e.g., because of transnational migration), or when
b) borders between cultures are reconfigured or dissolve (e.g., through transnational media spaces).
We will primarily discuss the emotional consequences of these developments in view of individual actors, social relationships, and social cohesion and integration. Students will learn key theories on the social and cultural construction of emotion, will become acquainted with studies on transnational migration and cultural change, and get to know different approaches to understand enculturation.
