SoSe 15: Liberal Nationalism and American Empire
Boris Vormann
Kommentar
On both sides of the political spectrum, American Empire has gained new currency as an analytical and as a descriptive term. In discussions about the role of the United States on the international stage, this notion of empire is intricately linked to collective imaginaries of civic nationalism and economic liberalism. This reading-intensive course discusses pivotal texts in these debates. Participants will develop an understanding of historiographies and political practices of American Empire and of some of the foundational readings on nationalism and liberalism in the United States.
