SoSe 15: Times of Change? Exploring Sustainability Transitions
Jens Marquardt, Sabine Weiland
Kommentar
For quite some time, we observe initiatives that promote structural transitions towards sustainable societies all over the world. Such a transition aims at a long-term sustainable development that aligns environmental and social concerns with economic targets, while acknowledging our planet’s boundaries. Fostering this fundamental change is one of the key challenges of our times. At the same time, we see numerous obstacles or conflicting interests (e.g. between economic development and environmental protection). Current regimes with established institutions and routines, powerful actors or the prevailing short-term orientation are contradicting the aim of sustainable development.
The seminar addresses the question of how to achieve a sustainable society and discusses the role of sustainable ways of living. It consists of three buidling blocks: First, a rather theoretical introduction covers the building blocks of sustainability transition (e.g. sustainability discourses, sustainability transformation, sustainability research etc.). Second, we will have a closer look at current debates related to the topic (e.g. green growth and degrowth). In the third part, we will analyse and discuss specific policy fields and practical fields of action, such as in agriculture (‘Agrarwende’), energy policy (‘Energiewende’), consumerism (‘Konsumwende’), transition towns etc., and their contribution to a societal transition towards sustainability.
