SoSe 15: Introduction to Critical Methods in Global Art History
Wendy Shaw
Kommentar
Global art history emerges from the application of art history, a discipline developed as part of the emergence of a cohesive "Western" and "modern" identity, to global subjects. Since the late nineteenth century, Western art historians have developed methods of examining the historical cultural production appealing to Western aesthetic sensibilities under the rubric of "art." Affected by the will to knowledge underlying colonial power as much as by a desire for unfamiliar inspiration for contemporary artistic production, such art history has often distinguished between historicized visual production and modern artistic production assumed to follow global paradigms. As a result, the practice of global art history is deeply implicated within critiques that emerge from postcolonial theory and the poststructuralist thought from which it emerges. This class provides a basic introduction to this thought in order to foster critical approaches to global art history. Schließen
