SoSe 15: Visual Satire in the Muslim World
Wendy Shaw
Kommentar
The idea for this course emerged in response to the attacks on the Charlie Hebdo offices in Paris on January 7, 2015. Discussions that followed the tragedy reiterated the terms of debate following the global response to the prophet Mohammed cartoons posted in the Danish newspaper Jyllands Posten. This itself became a caricature with the „West“ in defense of „freedom“ and with the „East“ in defense of religion. How can we step outside of this simplistic image that magnifies a cultural divide? Perhaps by finding out how visual satire functions in the cultures of „the other side.“
The course invites students to do original research relating to visual humor from the Middle East. Students will have to choose a region of the world, explore what kinds of visual humor exist both historically and in the present, choose a subject on which to do research, and present their work to the class. Visual humor includes caricatures, comic magazines, contemporary art, and film. The first part of the class will involve collective readings and group research, while the second part will consist of student presentations. Schließen
