SoSe 17: Modernity, Alternative Modernities, Global Modernity
Margrit Pernau
Kommentar
Modernity has been one of the key concepts with which actors described their experiences since the 19th century. It has also been central as an analytical concept in social sciences and in history since the 1950s, suggesting a linear development all societies went through. This normative idea was challenged – first by looking for alternative, plural modernities, then by avoiding the use of “modernity” altogether. Recent studies have brought back modernity in the shape of colonial modernities and more recently as global modernity, now once again in the singular.
The seminar will investigate both modernity as a category of experience and as an analytical concept, alternating between the reading of the core theoretical texts and of sources from a variety of genres and regions. Students are encouraged to bring in their regional expertise for the final reading list. Schließen
