SoSe 17: Global History of Gambling since 1800

The last fifty years have seen an amazing increase of legal gambling – first in the West, then in Asia and elsewhere around the world. Whereas in the 19th century there existed a global trend towards prohibiting and restricting gambling, since the 1960s, gambling became increasingly legalized and grew into a rapidly expanding economic sector. Lotteries, previously banned almost everywhere, became the choice of many states as a method to prop up their budgets. Casinos have not only increased in number and size, but have developed into a global growth industry. Betting in many parts of the world today is a popular pastime. Over the last half a century, to cut the matter short, legalized gambling has become an important and legitimate part of consumer culture and the capitalist society we live in. The seminar sets out to explore the central role of gambling in modern societies from three different angles. First, it concentrates on the relationship between gambling and the state. Second, we will trace the development of the casino city from its beginning in the German Rheinland to present day Macao. Third, the seminar focuses on the gambling subject and how it has been perceived and represented in historical perspective. Schließen
