Kommentar
Topics in Modern and Contemporary Art. This course will consist of an introduction to the major authors and debates in the history of modern and contemporary art. The proseminar lays the basis for your further studies and is meant to introduce you to a basic set of texts that have helped shape and transform our discipline since the mid-20th century. We will read classical and more recent texts by art historians, critics and theoreticians, such as, T.J. Demos, Clement Greenberg, Rosalind Krauss, Griselda Pollock, and Meyer Schapiro, as well as discuss such central concepts as modernism, avant-garde, primitivism, formalism, gender, post-colonialism and we will conclude the proseminar by asking the question 'What is the contemporary?' The course will included exclusions to, among others, the Berlin Biennial. The students will be required to actively participate in the discussions and will be assigned text to present in class.
