The history of concepts investigates the contestation and change of meanings of words and concepts through time. Concepts are embedded in the experience of historical actors and provide a focus for the way they interpret the world: what is sayable becomes important for what is doable. While traditionally, the history of concepts has focused on written texts only, this seminar wants to explore how to integrate impulses from visual history to achieve a more comprehensive understanding of concepts, thus opening the history of concepts up to multimediality and multimodality.
