SoSe 22: The Political Economy of European Integration

The European Union (EU) as we know it started as a post-war peace project. Today, it is the second largest trading bloc of the world, which yields great political influence. The broadening, deepening and widening of integration among the member states proofs the initial peace ideas successful. European economic integration, however, remains a much-contested project. Tensions revolve around different ideas on what kind of political economy the EU shall be and reach into many policy spheres, including recent topics, like the common procurement of health equipment or the extent of weapon deliveries into war and conflict zones. This course introduces concepts and theories of Political Economy to shed light on Europe’s history and presence: We ask and try to answer questions on how the EU developed from a peace-making into a market-making project, what conflicts and dilemmas this has entailed, what the most recent and future challenges are, and how the EU responds to them in institutional and policy regard.
