Kommentar
The post-cold war period has seen an increase in inter-state activities at the regional level that have changed and shaped international politics. Today, regional organization have become predominant actors in the global order. Discussions of regional integration often times focus on the European Union and the insights this institution provides. Although a key actor, the European model does not fully describe and explain the processes taking place in the non-Western world. Regional organizations outside of Europe exist in cultural and historical contexts that cannot be understood under a European lens and should be explored separately.
Throughout this course we will consider definitions of regional integration outside of Europe, the progression of regional integration in the global south, and the capacity of the EU model to diffuse in non-western contexts. We will engage with theories and debates of regional integration and comparative regionalism from a global south perspective. The class will be a combination of lectures and group discussions on readings. At the end of this course students will be able to identify and contextualize integration efforts beyond Europe.
