Paleontology is the scientific discipline that studies fossil remains of plants, animals and humans and their interactions with each other and with the environments. Paleontology uses techniques drawn from a wide range of sciences and makes an important contribution to biology, geology, archaeology, geography, climate research and Earth system modelling. The main aim of this course is to discuss with you various aspects of the research process and to train with you the basics of scientific writing. It doesn’t matter which text you currently work on or for which you want to prepare yourself for with this seminar, because the structure of bachelor, master or doctoral thesis has much in common with scientific journal articles and reports. With examples from my own extensive writing experience I will explain how to avoid the most frequent beginners’ mistakes and how to solve problems that may occur during the writing process. During the seminar, simple and understandable models for writing the thesis or journal manuscript are provided and discussed. We will train to formulate a good abstract and the right choice of keywords and an incisive title. The basics of the Poster making and Poster presentation will also be given. Last but not least, I will speak about scientific ethics. This concerns the "Acknowledgement" section which every text should contain and the proper way of citation in order to avoid plagiarism.
