WiSe 22/23: Varieties of Post-Socialist State-Society Relations
Sebastian Hoppe, Mihai Varga
Comments
The research project addresses the restructuring of state-society relations across the post-socialist region in the 21st century towards a far more outspoken role of the state. Numerous concepts compete in analysing this process, emphasizing its authoritarianism, state capitalist, conservative, or developmental characteristics. Our project studies the varieties of this restructuring, uncovering which post-socialist countries are affected by it, which ones are not, and why. Taking a comparative perspective, our group will work on a specifcation of state-society relations concerning the emerging developmental trajectories in the post-socialist region.
The project is aimed at MA students with a background in the social sciences and an interest in post-socialist societies who want to gain first experiences in interdisciplinary group research (2-3 people) under the guidance of more experienced researchers. The goal of the project is the publication of a small paper by each group.
