Comments
How the crime of apostasy was dealt with in Early Medieval Iberia and what were its cultural and political consequences? How can this knowledge help to improve our understanding of modern religious conflicts and processes of mutual cultural influence? The research project that I am currently developing aims to answer these questions through the analysis of the complex phenomenon of conversion in juxtaposition with apostasy in Iberian Christianity from the 5th to the 10th century.
This X-Student Research Group will tackle an important aspect of this project, which is the meaning and consequences of apostasy in modern religion and society. Thus, the question that will guide our seminar is: how can knowledge of past phenomena of apostasy help us to understand the cultural and political implications of it in our own society and vice versa - how modern instances of apostasy can help our understanding of the past?
No previous knowledge is required, and the target students are those from courses of History, Social and Cultural Anthropology, Religious Studies and Education. Undergraduates and Master students are welcome.
